A woman was cited after she lost control of her car and crashed into a house, causing a gas leak that forced Route 14 near Crystal Lake to be shut down Thursday afternoon.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Crystal Lake Police Department and Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 2:46 p.m. Thursday to the 8600 block of Route 14 in unincorporated Crystal Lake.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Communications Specialist Emily Matusek said it was reported as a single-vehicle crash into a house.

Deputies learned that an 18-year-old woman was driving a Buick sedan southeast on Route 14.

The woman reported losing control of her vehicle due to the winter road conditions, Matusek said.

The Buick left the roadway to the south and crashed into a residence, striking a gas meter, near Route 14 and Lucas Road.

The driver was uninjured and the home was unoccupied at the time of the crash.

The McHenry County Planning and Development deemed the home uninhabitable until the gas lines were repaired.

The house itself did not appear to sustain serious damage from the crash.

Route 14 was shut down in both directions for approximately two hours while Nicor Gas responded to the scene to fix the gas leak.

The roadway was reopened by around 4:50 p.m. Thursday.

The driver was cited for driving too fast for conditions, Matusek said.
