Police say a man drove drunk and crashed his car near Richmond, causing an unrestrained child passenger to be transported to a children’s hospital for their injuries.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Richmond Fire Protection District responded around 10:24 p.m. Sunday to the 7800 block of Tryon Grove Road in unincorporated Richmond.
Deputies were dispatched for a report of a single-vehicle crash, according to McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Communications Specialist Emily Matusek.
An initial investigation shows the vehicle left the roadway and hit a ditch embankment.
The driver was identified as Bryan M. Johnston, 35, of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin.
Johnston and a child, who was a passenger in his car, were transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry with non-life-threatening injuries, Matusek said.
The juvenile was later transferred to Comers Childrenโs Hospital in Chicago due to their age and injuries, Matusek added.
Court records show the child, who is 12 years old, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Johnston was under the influence of alcohol while driving, according to a criminal complaint.
Johnston was charged with aggravated driving under the influence causing bodily harm to a child, two counts of driving under the influence, child endangerment, failure to secure a child in a safety belt, failure to wear a seatbelt and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
He was transported to the McHenry County Jail where he was ordered held on a $20,000 bond.
Court records show Johnston was released Wednesday after posting 10% of his bond.
A status of attorney and preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 22.
