Buffalo Grove High School is mourning the loss of a 17-year-old student who unexpectedly died in her sleep at her home over the weekend, officials said.

Buffalo Grove High School Principal Jeff Wardle sent a message to students and parents on Monday about the death.

“It is with profound sadness that we share information with you about the loss of one of our students,” Wardle said.

Megan Stoesser, 17, who was a senior, died in her sleep unexpectedly Friday evening.

Paramedics pronounced her dead around 9:20 a.m. Saturday after being called to her residence on North Walker Lane West in Arlington Heights, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Stoesser’s family has been part of Buffalo Grove High School for the past 10 years with older siblings, Wardle said.

Stoesser was a member of the school’s bowling team and enjoyed culinary and graphics arts programs.

“In addition to our grief over this loss, we are sensitive to the fact that such an event has an impact on our community of students, staff, and parents,” Wardle said.

Students were provided with an opportunity to talk with members of the Student Services Division on Tuesday.

Wardle also provided parents with referrals for counseling agencies to provide support with students’ grief.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Stoesser family during this difficult time,” Wardle said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on Stoesser but has not ruled on a cause or manner of death as of Wednesday.
