Authorities say a suspect is on the run after he displayed a handgun and robbed a gas station of cash in Cary Wednesday evening.

The Cary Police Department responded around 9:25 p.m. Wednesday to the Marathon gas station, 8 East Main Street in Cary, for a report of an armed robbery.

Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said the store clerk called 911 to report the robbery.

The clerk reported he was robbed at gunpoint by a male offender, who was described as wearing a black hood sweatshirt and a mask covering his face.

Naydenoff said the offender displayed a small black handgun, according to the victim.

The offender demanded cash and left the business on foot in an unknown direction.

It was not known how much cash was taken in the robbery, Naydenoff said.

No shots were fired during the incident and no injuries were sustained by the clerk.

The Cary Police Department is actively investigating the incident.

Naydenoff said surveillance photos of the suspect were not immediately available for release.

The police department is asking businesses and residents in the area with exterior video surveillance systems to review their video footage between 9:15 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. in an attempt to identify the offender.
