Two stolen vehicles, one of which was stolen from Mundelein, fled from police at over 100 mph before one of the stolen cars crashed, leaving two injured in Waukegan.
The Mundelein Police Department around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday issued a regional police broadcast of a vehicle that was just stolen in Mundelein.
The broadcast indicated a stolen 2020 Cadillac XT5 was last seen traveling eastbound on Route 120 from Route 45 in Grayslake, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
A sheriff’s detective was traveling eastbound on Route 120 in the area of Route 21 around the same time.
The sheriff’s detective began searching for the stolen vehicle when he was passed by the Cadillac and a 2015 Nissan Pathfinder at an extremely high rate of speed in excess of 100 mph.
Covelli said the sheriff’s detective activated his emergency lights and siren but both vehicles fled at their excessively fast speed.
The sheriff’s detective lost sight of both vehicles as they continued traveling eastbound on Route 120.
The detective approached Route 120 and the offramp to Greenleaf Street when he saw the Nissan was involved in a crash with a 2008 BMW X5.
Covelli said the sheriff’s detective checked on the occupants of the BMW to see if they were injured.
It was learned that four individuals fled from the Nissan.
A sheriff’s canine responded in an attempt to track the individuals who fled but the track ended in a parking lot just south of the crash scene.
It is believed the offenders got into a different vehicle.
The adult driver and adult passenger of the BMW were transported to Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital with minor injuries.
Covelli said it is believed the Nissan, which was previously reported stolen out of Waukegan, was involved in the theft of the Cadillac.
The Cadillac was later recovered abandoned in the 1700 block of McAree Drive in Waukegan by the sheriff’s office.
Mundelein Police Department evidence technicians are processing the Cadillac for evidence.
The events remain under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Waukegan Police Department and Mundelein Police Department.
