Firefighters extricated a seriously injured driver from their vehicle and a medical helicopter flew them to the hospital following a crash on Interstate 90 near Huntley.
The Huntley Fire Protection District, Hampshire Fire Protection District and Illinois State Police responded around 12:40 p.m. Thursday to Interstate 90 near milepost 42 in Hampshire Township.
Illinois State Police said Troop 15 units received a call for a single-vehicle crash in the westbound lanes.
It was learned that a vehicle left the roadway to the right and struck a light pole, state police said.
The Hampshire Fire Protection District said crews arrived to find the vehicle with heavy damage.
The crash was on the off-ramp from Interstate 90 at Route 20.
The driver of the vehicle was trapped inside and firefighters had to use extrication equipment to free them, fire officials said.
The Pingree Grove Fire Protection District and Burlington Fire Protection District also assisted at the scene.
A Superior Air Med helicopter landed next to the scene in the parking lot of an Illinois Tollway maintenance building.
The victim was flown to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford with serious injuries.
The off-ramp from Interstate 90 westbound to Route 20 was shut down for several hours but has since reopened, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
State police said further information on the crash was not immediately available.
The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
