A man, whose only mode of transportation is his bicycle, which broke in the middle of a snowstorm last week, received a new bike thanks to a Huntley police officer.

Huntley Police Officer Joseph Lanute saw a person walking his bike along the road during last week’s snowstorm.

Lanute stopped to check on the man, who told him his bike had broken.

Lanute tried to fix the bike but it was beyond repair, the Huntley Police Department said.

The man told Lanute that the bike was his only mode of transportation and he feared that he could not afford to replace the bike.

“As a fellow avid cyclist, Officer Lanute knew he had to do more for him,” the police department said.

“The bike was not just a recreational item for him, it was the key to his mobility and independence.”

Lanute made sure the man made it home safely and began reaching out to organizations to procure a bike.

The Lucky Brake Bike Shop in Crystal Lake donated a bike but it needed a seat and new brakes.

Lanute paid for the parts and completed the repairs himself on his own time, the police department said.

The rest of his police shift joined him earlier this week to surprise the resident with the new bike.

“We are so proud of the kindness and compassion we see in our employees everyday. Thank you to Officer Lanute, and all the others in the community, who go the extra mile to help others,” the police department said.
