A woman is in custody after she is believed to have intentionally run over her boyfriend in Winthrop Harbor, trapping him underneath the vehicle and leaving him dead.

The Winthrop Harbor Police Department and Winthrop Harbor Fire Department responded around 12:10 p.m. Sunday to the 1300 block of Sheridan Road for a report of a domestic disturbance.

Officers arrived and learned that a male victim had been struck by a car.

The man was trapped underneath the car and the fire department arrived to extricate him.

The victim, who was unconscious and not breathing, was extricated from under the car after firefighters used jacks and cribbing to remove him.

A medical helicopter was requested to land nearby but was later canceled.

The man was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was pronounced dead.

Officers arrested the female driver of the vehicle that struck him.

Charges have not been announced yet against the woman.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team was called to the scene to assist in the investigation.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office said they responded to the hospital and an autopsy is being conducted Monday.

The Winthrop Harbor Police Department said they are also being assisted by the Lake County Coroner’s Office and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office in the investigation.
