Police say a driver responsible for accidentally crashing an SUV into a gym in Riverwoods, leaving four injured and one victim pinned, has been cited.

The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District and Riverwoods Police Department responded around 8:30 a.m. on March 12 to Orangetheory Fitness, 2037 Milwaukee Avenue in Riverwoods.

A 911 call was made for a report of an auto accident with injuries, according to Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Steve McCaughey.

A 911 caller reported that a single vehicle had crashed into the building.

The caller also reported that one of the victims was possibly pinned in the crash, McCaughey said.

Emergency crews arrived and found that no victims were trapped or pinned in the crash.

McCaughey said it was learned that one of the victims had initially been pinned between the car and the front counter. Four victims were injured in the crash.

Three of them were transported to local hospitals. Their conditions were not known.

One of the four victims was treated by paramedics and released at the scene, McCaughey said.

Riverwoods Police Chief Bruce Dayno said on Tuesday that the driver of the SUV was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Dayno said the female driver’s foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal, causing the crash.

The Wheeling, Northbrook and Deerfield-Bannockburn fire departments assisted at the scene.

A restoration company was called to the scene to board up the front windows and doors that were damaged.
