Police say a juvenile was arrested after another juvenile was shot down the street from a daycare facility in Waukegan Wednesday afternoon.
The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 4:18 p.m. Wednesday to the 100 block of Philippa Avenue in Waukegan for a report of a shooting.
Officers arrived and reported finding one victim with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Waukegan Police Commander Scott Chastain told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the gunshot victim was a juvenile, whose age was not immediately available.
Paramedics transported the victim to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. The juvenile’s injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
Officers conducted an investigation and interviewed several juveniles.
One of the juveniles was arrested on a warrant for an unrelated criminal case, Chastain said.
Officers also recovered a handgun at the shooting scene.
A mother who was picking their child up from Children’s Garden Day Care, which is on the same block as where the shooting occurred, said she was in her car when she heard the shots.
The woman called 911 after hearing the shots and seeing numerous people run out of a house.
The children and staff at the daycare center went into the basement until it was safe.
The investigation remains ongoing by the Waukegan Police Department.
