A health technician was arrested after he allegedly physically abused a resident at a state care facility for developmentally disabled people in Waukegan.
Andre D. Smith, 53, of North Chicago, was charged with one count of aggravated battery and one count of official misconduct, both Class 3 felonies.
The Illinois State Police told Lake and McHenry County Scanner they initiated an investigation into Smith on February 1.
Smith was employed as an Illinois Department of Human Services Mental Health Technician.
He was working at Ann Kiley Developmental Center in Waukegan, which serves a broad spectrum of individuals with moderate to high behavioral and low to moderate medical needs.
The state police said they were investigating Smith due to a resident reporting they were physically abused by him on February 1.
Further details regarding the nature of the abuse were not immediately available.
Division of Internal Investigation agents obtained an arrest warrant for the charges against Smith following the investigation.
A judge signed the warrant carrying a $100,000 bond, state police said.
Smith self-surrendered to the Lake County Jail on Tuesday.
He was released from custody the same day after a judge reduced his bond to $25,000.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 27.
