Prosecutors say a man collapsed to the ground and was hospitalized after he was attacked by a man who he accidentally bumped into at a grocery store in Waukegan.

Dartanion D. Smith, 35, of Waukegan, was charged with battery causing bodily harm and battery making physical contact.

The incident occurred on December 12 at Tony’s Fresh Market, 1700 North Lewis Avenue in Waukegan.

Smith had walked into the store while holding the hand of a child, according to Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Francis DeRosa.

Smith used his left hand to pick up a basket and the victim accidentally bumped into Smith’s basket, DeRosa said.

DeRosa said Smith punched the victim, causing him to collapse to the ground.

Smith repeatedly punched the victim, who remained on the ground, DeRosa said.

Surveillance video captured Smith and the child leaving the scene and fleeing in a vehicle.

Paramedics transported the victim by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

The victim told officers that Smith punched him in multiple parts of his body during the attack, DeRosa said.

The victim suffered multiple non-life-threatening injuries.

Smith was arrested after a warrant was issued for his arrest last week.

A public defender representing Smith during a bond hearing acknowledged the man has a lengthy criminal history.

The public defender said Smith took anger management classes to “better himself” after his last criminal case.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Smith held on a $25,000 bond.

Smith’s bond was reduced and he was released following a Monday court hearing where he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
