Gabriel Cruz, 45, of Crystal Lake.

A grand jury has indicted a man for allegedly slashing a woman with a knife and strangling her while she held a child in Crystal Lake, court records show.

Gabriel Cruz, 45, of Crystal Lake, was charged with aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, two counts of domestic battery and child endangerment.

A grand jury later indicted him on additional counts of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Cruz strangled a woman, whom he is in a relationship with, using his forearm around 3 a.m. on February 15.

The complaint said Cruz also slashed the woman’s left-hand multiple times with a fixed-blade knife.

She suffered multiple lacerations that bled, the complaint said.

The victim was carrying a child, who was placed in danger when Cruz placed his body weight on the victim while trying to strangle her, the complaint said.

The Crystal Lake Police Department responded and arrested Cruz. He was transported to the McHenry County Jail.

McHenry County Judge Mark Gerhardt ordered Cruz held on a $75,000 bond. Cruz was released from the jail after posting 10% of his bond.

Cruz pleaded not guilty to his charges during an arraignment hearing on March 31.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on April 21 for a hearing on a motion.
