A woman suffered serious injuries and had to be extricated from her car and flown to the hospital after police say she ran a red light and struck another vehicle in Cary.
The Cary Police Department and Cary Fire Protection District responded around 11:50 a.m. Thursday to the intersection of Route 14 and West Main Street for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Alex Vucha, a spokesperson for the Cary Fire Protection District, said firefighters and paramedics arrived on the scene in three minutes.
They found a serious head-on crash in the intersection involving two vehicles.
Firefighters worked to extricate a female driver in a blue Chevrolet SUV.
A LifeNet medical helicopter was requested to the scene, Vucha said.
The woman was extricated by firefighters and transported to an awaiting LifeNet helicopter near Industrial Drive in Cary.
Vucha said the woman was airlifted to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The female driver of a tan Nissan sedan was transported by ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington with minor injuries.
Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said the driver of the Chevrolet was a 59-year-old from North Las Vegas, Nevada.
A preliminary investigation showed the Chevrolet was driving westbound on Route 14 when the driver disobeyed the traffic light, Naydenoff said.
The Chevrolet struck the Nissan, which was traveling eastbound on Route 14.
The 59-year-old woman has not been cited yet but it is expected she will be, Naydenoff said.
Both female drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles.
Route 14 was closed in both directions for nearly an hour due to the crash.
