A 76-year-old man died and three others were injured after a car ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle in Wadsworth Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The Newport Fire Protection District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 1:55 p.m. Tuesday to Route 173 and Mill Creek Road in Wadsworth for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and located two vehicles with significant damage, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
A preliminary investigation showed a 2018 Hyundai Elantra, driven by a 45-year-old Milwaukee, Wisconsin woman, was traveling northbound on Mill Creek Road.
The driver of the Hyundai failed to stop at the stop sign as she approached Route 173, Covelli said.
As the Hyundai entered the intersection, it was struck by an eastbound Volkswagen GTI, driven by a 39-year-old Lake Villa man.
There were three passengers in the Hyundai and all were injured.
The front seat passenger, a 23-year-old Milwaukee, Wisconsin woman, was transported to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A backseat passenger, a 76-year-old Mexico man, was transported to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie with major injuries.
He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, Covelli said.
The third passenger, an 18-year-old Milwaukee, Wisconsin man who was in the backseat, was transported to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Hyundai was transported to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Volkswagen was uninjured, Covelli said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
