Residents were displaced from their home after a fire engulfed a house in Round Lake Park and caused the roof to collapse Wednesday morning, fire officials said.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 11:04 a.m. Wednesday to the 300 block of East Lake Shore Drive in Round Lake Park for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived in two minutes and found heavy flames coming from the side of a two-story, single-family dwelling, according to Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Eric Hair.

The fire appeared to have started on the outside of the home and extended up the side of the structure into the first floor, second floor and attic space.

The roof of the home collapsed minutes after firefighters arrived on the scene, Hair said.

Crews began working in defensive mode, meaning firefighters worked from the outside to extinguish the fire, for approximately 45 minutes until the fire was brought under control.

Firefighters worked for an additional two hours locating and extinguishing several hot spots throughout the structure due to the extent of the damage.

Hair said the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature but remains under investigation.

No residents or firefighters were injured and the house appears to be a total loss, Hair said. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

The Grayslake, Fox Lake, Wauconda, Lake Villa and Lake Zurich fire departments assisted at the scene.

McHenry and Antioch fire departments covered calls in the Round Lake area during the incident.

The fire department said that residents are reminded to check their smoke detectors to ensure they are functioning.
