Jamaree T. Payne, 23, of Zion.

Prosecutors say a man, who is on parole, attacked another man and pushed him down a flight of stairs, leaving the victim with a serious injury in Zion.

Jamaree T. Payne, 23, of Zion, was charged with one count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, a Class 3 felony.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said a neighbor went upstairs to speak with Payne on April 11.

The two began arguing and Payne grabbed a chair and struck the victim in the head while they were on the porch, Katris said.

Payne pushed the victim down a staircase with approximately 15-17 steps, Katris said.

The victim suffered a compound fracture to his ankle that left his bone sticking out.

The Zion Fire-Rescue Department and Zion Police Department responded to the apartment building, located in the 3000 block of Gilboa Avenue.

Paramedics transported the man to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, Katris said.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Payne held on a $250,000 bond.

Potkonjak noted that Payne has a prior criminal history involving several battery cases.

State records show Payne was on parole at the time of the attack after having been released from prison on March 3 for another aggravated battery case in Lake County.

Payne remains held in the Lake County Jail and would need to post $25,000 cash in order to be released.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 9.
