The coroner has identified a 41-year-old man who died after suffering critical injuries when he was struck by a vehicle, which fled the scene in Waukegan Saturday evening.

An autopsy performed on Raul Zarinana-Ayala, 41, of Waukegan, showed he died as a result of blunt force injuries from a crash, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 10:12 p.m. Saturday to Washington Street west of Green Bay Road.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said officers received calls from citizens reporting a person was lying in the roadway.

Officers arrived and found Zarinana-Ayala had been struck by a vehicle and was in critical condition.

The Waukegan Fire Department transported the man to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

Zarinana-Ayala was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, Chastain said.

Investigators reviewed video footage in the area and learned Zarinana-Ayala was attempting to cross southbound across Washington Street.

Zarinana-Ayala was struck by an eastbound vehicle, which fled the scene continuing eastbound on Washington Street, Chastain said.

Chastain said a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle and with damage consistent with the collision was located in North Chicago around 12:20 a.m.

That vehicle had been reported stolen to police approximately 30 minutes after the hit-and-run. The vehicle was towed and processed for evidence.

The Waukegan Police Department is investigating the identification of the driver involved.
