Clerks at 13 gas stations and other establishments in Lake County were cited by the sheriff’s office after being caught selling tobacco or nicotine products to people under 21, authorities said.

The Lake County Sheriffโ€™s Office recently concluded its second round of tobacco compliance checks in 2023.

The checks were conducted at businesses that sell tobacco or nicotine products in Lake County.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said the compliance checks are intended to ensure businesses selling tobacco and nicotine products are not selling to anyone under the age of 21.

The checks also ensure the proper tobacco sale signage is on display.

Of the 67 establishments checked, 13 of them failed the compliance check and 54 successfully completed the checks, Covelli said.

Akber A Mir, a clerk at the Shell gas station at 41867 N Route 41 in Wadsworth, and Sandeep S Uppal, a clerk at Toor’s Citgo Truck Stop at 16470 W Russell Rd in Wadsworth, were both cited for unlawful sale of tobacco to a person under 21.

Marilyn A Rothschild, a clerk at the BP gas station at 39105 N Route 41 in Wadsworth, and a juvenile who was working as a clerk at Love’s Truck Stop at 43100 North Route 41 in Wadsworth were both cited for unlawful sale of tobacco to a person under 21.

The 7-Eleven store at the Lake Forest Oasis, 13845 West Oasis Service Road, was found to be in violation and clerk Syed R. Tahir was cited.

The Circle K gas station at 20020 North Route 12 in Deer Park was also found in violation and clerk Joani A. Brito was cited.

Iqbal S Hashmi, who works as a clerk at Lake Cook Smoke Shop at 20017 North Route 12 in unincorporated Palatine, was cited for unlawful sale of tobacco to a person under 21.

The Mobil gas station at 33199 North Route 45 in unincorporated Grayslake was found in violation and clerk Lorena Gonzalez Alba was cited, as was Srikanth Kamtam, who is a clerk at the Mobile gas station at 18450 West Grand Avenue in unincorporated Gurnee.

An additional Mobil gas station, located at 27161 West Grass Lake Road in unincorporated Antioch, was found in violation and clerk Jayeshkumar Patel was cited.

A fourth Mobil gas station, located at 39119 North Lewis Avenue in Beach Park, was found in violation and clerk Erin D. Kolbinger was cited.

Rylee J. Johnson, who is the clerk at the Monster Cloud Vape and Cigar at 27273 Volo Village Road in Volo, was also cited.

64 establishments in Beach Park, Wadsworth, Deer Park, Lake Barrington, Volo, Ingleside, Third Lake and unincorporated areas of Lake Villa, Grayslake, Antioch, Mundelein, Palatine, Lake Zurich, Lake Bluff, Deerfield and Lake Forest successfully completed their compliance checks.

The businesses checked include those within the jurisdiction of the Lake County Sheriffโ€™s Office or communities that contract with the sheriffโ€™s office for policing services, not those within municipal limits.
