Firefighters were on the scene for nearly 20 hours working to extinguish large mounds of material that caught fire Friday at a recycling plant in Waukegan, authorities said.

The Waukegan Fire Department responded around 5:30 p.m. Friday to TKG Environmental Services Group, 345 Lakewood Avenue in Waukegan, for a report of a structure fire.

Waukegan Fire Marshall Todd Zupec said it was reported that smoke and fire were seen from the business.

Firefighters arrived to find a large debris pile on fire adjacent to the building.

The material piles were mostly wood, Zupec said, adding that there is no concern of any toxic release.

According to the company’s website, they provide integrated recycling of construction and demolition debris.

Crews remained on the scene with heavy equipment operators to fully extinguish the fire through Saturday morning, Zupec said.
