A Lake in the Hills man was seriously injured and charged with driving under the influence after police say he drove into oncoming traffic and struck a car in Crystal Lake.
The Crystal Lake Police Department and Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 7:52 p.m. Sunday to Route 176 east of Briarwood Road for a report of a two-vehicle crash with injuries.
A preliminary investigation revealed a motorcycle was traveling westbound on Route 176 west of Route 14 near Lippold Park, according to Crystal Lake Deputy Police Chief Richard Neumann.
The motorcycle crossed into the eastbound lane of traffic and “made contact” with another vehicle, Neumann said.
The motorcycle traveled into the ditch after striking the vehicle, causing the motorcyclist to be ejected.
A witness reported the operator appeared to be unconscious at the scene.
A LifeNet medical helicopter was initially requested but was unable to fly due to inclement weather.
Paramedics transported the rider to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley. His current condition was not immediately released.
The occupants of the other vehicle involved did not sustain any injuries during the crash, Neumann said.
The driver of the motorcycle, Austin Lehr, 24, of Lake in the Hills, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
A portion of Route 176 was shut down for several hours while investigators worked on the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Crystal Lake Police Department.
