A suspect is in custody after authorities say he trespassed into a home and fled on foot from officers, prompting a search that put area schools in Algonquin on lockdown Tuesday.
Algonquin Deputy Police Chief Ryan Markham said the department was called to the 500 block of Lincoln Street in Algonquin around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The 911 caller reported a violation of an order of protection at the residence.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court alleges Rafael R. Herrera, 30, of Carpentersville, trespassed into the residence of a woman and picked the lock to her bedroom door.
He stayed inside the home despite being told to leave, the complaint said.
The complaint also said Herrera attempted to convince the victim to not press charges against him for a recent domestic battery.
The suspect fled on foot and officers engaged in a foot pursuit before losing sight of him, Markham said.
The police department notified Algonquin Community School District 300.
Algonquin Middle School and Eastview Elementary School were both placed on a soft lockdown facilitated by a school resource officer.
“This was a purely preventive measure and there was no threat posed to students or staff,” Markham told Lake and McHenry County Scanner.
The Algonquin Police Department was assisted by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Carpentersville Police Department, McHenry County Conservation Police and Kane County Forest Preserve Police.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office also sent a canine and a drone to assist in the search.
Herrera, who was not reported to be armed, was taken into custody a short time later without further incident.
Algonquin Police Department Sgt. Jason Burzynski said the soft lockdown was lifted after the suspect was taken into custody.
Herrera was transported to the McHenry County Jail and has been charged with intimidation, criminal trespass to residence and resisting a peace officer.
