Wasfi Awwad, 29, of Lake in the Hills.

A Lake in the Hills man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for buying and providing the fentanyl-laced cocaine that killed a McHenry man in Crystal Lake.

Wasfi Awwad, 29, of Lake in the Hills, was charged in January 2022 with three counts of drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said Awwad delivered cocaine and fentanyl to Daniel Iles, 30, of McHenry, on September 22, 2021.

Iles ingested a portion of the cocaine and fentanyl, leading to his death, the complaint said.

A motion filed by McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew T. Brodersen said that Iles was found deceased in a room at the Super 8 Motel, 577 Crystal Point Road in Crystal Lake.

A search of the room resulted in the recovery of a white powder that later tested positive for the presence of cocaine.

Investigators conducted a search of Awwad’s phone and interviewed Awwad and others.

Through the investigation, it was learned Awwad arranged to purchase Percocet pills and cocaine for himself and Iles on September 21, 2021, Brodersen said.

Awwad and Iles went to Palatine to pick up the cocaine and Percocet pills. Awwad was the one who purchased the drugs, Brodersen said.

An autopsy on Iles led to the finding that his death was caused by the combined effects of cocaine and fentanyl.

An arrest warrant carrying a $1 million bond was issued for Awwad by a McHenry County judge.

While Awwad was being held in the McHenry County Jail, he was charged with aggravated battery in connection with a fight involving another inmate, court records show.

He recently entered into a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Awwad pleaded guilty to an added charge of possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, a Class 1 felony, in exchange for his other charges being dismissed.

McHenry County Judge Tiffany Davis on Monday approved the plea and sentenced Awwad to 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The sentence will be served at 50% and Awwad will receive 547 days of credit for time served in the county jail.
