A driver was cited for causing a head-on crash that required five people, including four young children, to be transported to the hospital near Crystal Lake Saturday evening.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 9:05 p.m. Saturday to Crystal Lake Avenue and Pingree Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake for a vehicle crash with injuries.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Eric Ellis told Lake and McHenry County Scanner the crash involved two vehicles.

The at-fault driver, Christina Ortega-Ceja, 32, of Woodstock, was traveling westbound on Crystal Lake Avenue west of Pingree Road in a 2010 Ford Flex.

Ortega-Ceja, for unknown reasons, crossed over into the oncoming lane of traffic, striking an eastbound vehicle, Ellis said and court records show.

Ortega-Ceja was the sole occupant of her vehicle.

The second vehicle involved was occupied by the driver and four children. Four ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

The four children, whose ages range from 2-10 years old, were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Ellis said.

A fifth person was also transported to the hospital, according to fire department radio traffic.

Ortega-Ceja was cited for improper lane usage, headlight or taillight violation and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Ellis said drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.
