The coroner has identified a man who police say traveled to Dockers restaurant in Fox Lake and shot his brother, who is the restaurant owner, multiple times before fatally shooting himself.

The Fox Lake Police Department and Fox Lake Fire Protection District responded around 1:05 p.m. Tuesday to Dockers, 33 West Grand Avenue in Fox Lake, for a report of a person shot.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli said a preliminary investigation shows a 63-year-old man traveled to the restaurant, which his brother, a 56-year-old, still owns.

The 63-year-old man, a Fox Lake resident, was identified as Marciano Martinez, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

Marciano Martinez intended to confront his brother about an ongoing feud, Covelli said.

An argument ensued in the kitchen and Marciano Martinez pulled out a gun and shot his brother, Mario Martinez.

Mario Martinez was able to flee outside but his brother followed him and continued shooting at him, Covelli said.

The 56-year-old collapsed outside after he was shot multiple times.

Covelli said Marciano Martinez fatally shot himself just outside of the restaurant before police arrived.

Mario Martinez was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

He was listed in critical condition and underwent surgery.

Fox Lake Police Chief Jimmy Lee said many of the patrons at the restaurant reported not knowing what was going on at the time of the incident.

A group of patrons told officers they were not being served after being seated so they got up and left.

Some patrons thought they heard construction noise and others described it as gunshots, Lee said.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office and Lake County Major Crime Task Force responded to the scene.

An autopsy showed that Marciano Martinez died from a gunshot wound to the head, Banek said.

Surrounding police departments also responded to assist with the incident.

Several schools in the area went on lockdown due to the shooting. Lee said there is no threat to the community.

Dockers said in a statement Tuesday they would be closed until further notice.

“We ask that you PLEASE respect the privacy of the entire family and our staff, as we try to navigate through this painful time,” the restaurant said.

“Thank you all so much for the outpouring of love, support, and concern for our Dockers family. Please continue to be respectful of our privacy as we all try to navigate through this difficult time. Our restaurant remains closed at this time,” Dockers said in a follow-up statement Wednesday.
