The state fire marshal and fire and police investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that caused $250,000 in damage and left a Lakewood home uninhabitable.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 5:54 a.m. Saturday to the 9300 block of Firth Court in Lakewood for a report of a structure fire.

Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Chief Paul DeRaedt said that someone who was not at the home reported to police there was a fire inside the residence.

Firefighters arrived in six minutes and reported the fire appeared to be out.

A search of the one-story, single-family home revealed no one was inside, DeRaedt said.

Fire crews extinguished some smoldering contents but the fire did not require much water to extinguish.

The home sustained significant heat and smoke damage throughout, DeRaedt said, adding that the fire appeared to have mostly burned itself out.

The residence was declared uninhabitable due to the damage. No firefighters were injured.

DeRaedt said damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $250,000.

Investigators from the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department, Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal and Lakewood Police Department are working together on the investigation.

DeRaedt said the fire is not believed to be suspicious in nature but the cause is undetermined and remains under investigation.
