Police are searching for the gunmen who opened fire on two men, killing one of them and injuring the other, outside of an apartment building in North Chicago Saturday evening.

The North Chicago Police Department and North Chicago Fire Department responded around 7:35 p.m. Saturday to the 1400 block of Cypress Avenue for a report of a shooting.

Officers arrived and located two men with gunshot wounds, according to Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesman Christopher Covelli.

One victim, a 42-year-old North Chicago man, was unconscious and not breathing.

He was rushed to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he was pronounced dead, Covelli said.

The second victim, an 18-year-old North Chicago man, was transported to an area hospital where he remains. His condition has been stabilized.

A preliminary investigation shows the men were outside of a home when they were shot, Covelli said.

The investigation shows the shooting appears to be targeted and not random.

The shooters fled from the scene immediately following the shooting, Covelli said.

Over 20 shots appeared to have been fired based on the number of shell casings seen on the ground at the scene.

A sedan surrounded by crime scene tape had its windows shot out and bullet holes on the outside of the car.

The North Chicago Police Department requested the assistance of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force to assist in the investigation.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is scheduling an autopsy on the 42-year-old man.

Covelli said the investigation remains ongoing at this time.
