Police say a 22-year-old man is in custody after he randomly fired shots at a home in Round Lake while residents were sleeping inside early Monday morning.
The Round Lake Police Department responded around 1 a.m. Monday to the 400 block of Savoy Drive in Round Lake for shots fired.
Round Lake Police Chief David Prus said a resident called 911 after hearing the shots and reviewing their Ring doorbell security camera.
The resident observed a person walking and saw two flashes consistent with a gun being fired, Prus said.
Officers arrived on the scene and began to canvass the area.
A shell casing was located in the area and a bullet was recovered from a second-story wall in a nearby residence.
The residents of that home were inside sleeping at the time, Prus said. No injuries were reported.
Officers searching the area located Pelumi Rotimi-Ajayi, 22, who lives nearby in the 600 block of South Rosehall Lane in Round Lake.
Rotimi-Ajayi had been walking near his residence when officers stopped him.
Officers recovered a Ruger 9mm firearm in Rotimi-Ajayi’s possession, Prus said.
Rotimi-Ajayi had a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card but did not have a valid concealed carry license.
Prus said the caliber of the firearm matched the shell casing and bullet from the crime scene.
Prus said the shooting appears to be random and there was no intended target. Rotimi-Ajayi had no known connection to the home that was shot.
Rotimi-Ajayi was taken into custody without incident.
He has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
Rotimi-Ajayi is scheduled to appear in bond court Monday afternoon.
