A teenage girl and a 22-year-old woman were both hospitalized after they were shot by gunmen who opened fire on a crowd in a parking lot in Waukegan Sunday evening.
The Waukegan Police Department and North Chicago Police Department responded around 9 p.m. Sunday to the area of 14th Street and Lewis Avenue on the border of North Chicago and Waukegan for a report of shots fired.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Scott Chastain said it was learned that multiple subjects gathered in a parking lot at 1824 14th Street in Waukegan.
The gathering was for a pre-arranged fight that was supposed to take place between two females over a relationship with another person, Chastain said.
While gathering in the parking lot before the fight started, there were shots fired into the crowd of people.
A juvenile, who is a Waukegan resident in her teenage years, was shot in the hip and transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, Chastain said.
A 22-year-old Park City woman was shot in the right thigh and was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.
Officers collected two different caliber shell casings, indicating that multiple people were shooting guns, Chastain said.
Waukegan Police interviewed several people and collected all evidence at the scene.
No one is in custody and the investigation remains ongoing.
The Waukegan Police Department said they are asking anyone with information to call the department’s tip line at 847-360-9001.
