A jury has convicted a Woodstock man for putting a child in a headlock, pulling him to the ground and striking him repeatedly, leaving him injured in Woodstock.
Steven B. Degutis, 37, of Woodstock, was charged in November 2021 with two counts of domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
He was later charged with two additional counts of domestic battery.
A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court said Degutis intentionally caused bodily harm to a juvenile family member on November 8, 2021.
The two were at Degutis’ residence in the 600 block of Oak Street in Woodstock.
Degutis restrained the child in a headlock, pulled him to the ground and struck the boy several times in the back right shoulder and right arm, the complaint said.
Degutis also struck the child with an open hand, causing a large bruise, the complaint said.
The Woodstock Police Department was notified the next day of the incident, which occurred the prior evening.
Degutis was arrested and released from custody after posting 10% of his $5,000 bond.
A jury trial was held Monday and the jury convicted Degutis of all four charges, court records show.
The victim, Degutis’ wife and two of the responding officers testified at trial.
Video evidence of the attack and photographs of the victim’s injuries were also presented.
Degutis faces up to one year in jail. He also faces a fine of up to $2,500 for each count.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 8.
