A Round Lake man, who was just recently released from prison, has been arrested after prosecutors say he strangled a pregnant teenage girl in Round Lake.
Eric Alcantara, 20, of Round Lake, was charged with aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery, aggravated battery of a pregnant person and two counts of domestic battery.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Emma Smoler said the Round Lake Police Department responded on May 9 to a domestic disturbance.
Officers learned Alcantara and the victim, who is six months pregnant and a juvenile, are dating.
The two got to Alcantara’s residence and the man told his girlfriend that he had sex with other women to upset her, Smoler said.
They got into an argument and Alcantara strangled the victim by grabbing her neck, causing her trouble breathing, Smoler said.
Officers observed visible injuries on multiple areas of the victim’s body.
Smoler said Alcantara also punched out the window of a car that the victim had tried getting into while she was leaving.
State records show Alcantara was paroled on March 24 from the Illinois Department of Corrections.
He had been serving a sentence of 18 months for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon cases in Lake County and Cook County.
Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak noted that Alcantara has an extensive juvenile criminal record.
Potkonjak ordered Alcantara held on a $500,000 and also ordered an assessment to be completed to see if Alcantara should be placed on GPS monitoring upon jail release.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 8.
