Sheriff’s officials say a North Chicago man died after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver after he got out of his car, which was stuck in a ditch, near Fox Lake Monday morning.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Spring Grove Fire Protection District responded around 2:08 a.m. Monday to Wilmot Road and Paddock Road in unincorporated Fox Lake for a vehicle crash.

First responders found a male subject who was unconscious and not breathing down on the roadway, the sheriff’s office said.

A preliminary investigation showed the man, a 39-year-old from North Chicago, was driving on Wilmot Road when he got stuck in a ditch.

The man got out of his vehicle near the roadway when an unknown white vehicle, possibly a Kia, was traveling southbound on Wilmot Road.

The vehicle struck the man just north of Paddock Road and fled the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

The 39-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is in the process of being scheduled.
