A woman was critically injured and had to be flown to the hospital after she drove into oncoming lanes and crashed head-on into a semi-truck on Route 176 near Marengo Friday morning.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Marengo Fire and Rescue Districts and Union Fire Protection District responded around 7:18 a.m. Friday to Route 176 and Dunham Road in unincorporated Marengo.
Sheriff’s deputies responded for a call of a crash involving two vehicles, according to McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Creighton.
A preliminary investigation shows a white 2019 Chevrolet Trax was traveling westbound on Route 176.
A 2015 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer truck was traveling eastbound, driven by a 31-year-old man from California.
The Chevrolet, driven by a 56-year-old Rockford woman, crossed the centerline for unknown reasons, Creighton said.
The Chevrolet struck the Freightliner head-on, causing the driver of the Chevrolet to be trapped in her vehicle.
Firefighters had to extricate her and she was then flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition.
The driver of the Freightliner was treated on the scene and did not require transport to the hospital, Creighton said.
Route 176 was shut down from Union Road and Deerpass Road for several hours while a crash investigation was completed.
The incident remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit.
