The coroner’s office has released the identity of a 25-year-old man who drowned after jumping into the Chain O’Lakes and never resurfacing near Lake Villa Sunday morning.

An autopsy performed Monday on Anthony Mendoza, 25, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, preliminarily showed he died as a result of drowning, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Marine Unit responded around 1:05 a.m. Sunday to the “Long Channel” located between Petite Lake and Spring Lake for a man who went underwater.

Members of the marine unit along with the Lake Villa Fire Protection District and surrounding fire departments searched the water for several hours, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

Sheriff’s deputies also used a drone in the search.

Mendoza was recovered from the water around 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

Covelli said a preliminary investigation shows Mendoza was likely heavily intoxicated. Witnesses observed him drinking at a birthday party.

Mendoza, after attending a party, returned to a residence in the 25100 block of West Forest Drive in unincorporated Lake Villa.

He jumped into the water from a pier with his clothes on, Covelli said.

Mendoza was able to swim to shore and a relative helped him remove his wet clothing and took him to bed.

Covelli said the man left his bed a short time later and jumped into the water again without clothing and attempted to swim across the channel.

Mendoza went underwater as he swam across the channel.

The incident remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit.
