An 18-year-old man died after he was wounded in a shooting that resulted in gunfire also hitting an apartment building in Waukegan Thursday afternoon.

The Waukegan Police Department and Waukegan Fire Department responded around 2:33 p.m. Thursday to the 500 block of South Genesee Street for a report of a shooting.

Officers arrived and located a victim with at least one or two gunshot wounds to his body at the Barwell Manor Apartments.

The 18-year-old man had been outside when the shooting occurred, according to a police report.

Officers found him inside an apartment when they arrived.

Paramedics arrived and transported the victim to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Evidence markers were seen placed over numerous spent shell casings in the roadway on South Avenue.

Some of the apartments in the complex had also been struck by the gunfire, the report said.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is withholding the identity of the victim until the family has been notified.

The incident remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department.
