Fire officials say approximately $1 million in damage was caused by a fire at a building, which houses a paint store and apartments, in downtown Crystal Lake Thursday evening.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 6:30 p.m. Thursday to JC Licht Benjamin Moore Paint & Decor Store, 73 North Williams Street in Crystal Lake, for a report of a structure fire.

Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Bill Whyte said firefighters arrived within four minutes and found smoke coming from the rear of the two-story building.

The building contains a commercial store and apartments above the store.

All occupants evacuated on their own before the fire department arrived, Whyte said.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level for additional fire departments to assist.

Firefighters remained on the scene for over four hours extinguishing the fire and performing overhaul operations.

Power and gas were disconnected to the property, leaving it uninhabitable.

The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the residents of the apartments.

No injuries were reported, Whyte said. The estimated loss to the property was $1 million.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
