A man is in critical condition after he was found unresponsive after he was ejected approximately 50 feet from his motorcycle during a crash near Richmond.
The Richmond Township Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:58 p.m. Friday to the 7900 block of Tryon Grove Road in unincorporated Richmond.
The 911 caller reported the victim of a motorcycle crash was unresponsive and they had sustained a head injury, fire officials said.
Fire crews arrived and found a single motorcycle off the roadway.
The sole occupant of the vehicle was lying unconscious approximately 50 feet from the motorcycle.
Fire officials said the victim had potentially life-threatening injuries, which led to Mercyhealth MD-1 and a medical helicopter being requested.
The Mercyhealth MD-1, an emergency room physician, was unavailable to respond and the closest available helicopter was nearly 40 minutes away.
Paramedics made the decision to transport the man by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry.
The victim was in critical condition at the time he was transported, fire officials said.
The Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District and Wonder Lake Fire Protection District assisted at the scene.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office shut down Tryon Grove Road between Keystone Road and Barnard Mill Road for several hours.
The Richmond Township Fire Protection District said drivers should be cautious of motorcycles and motorcyclists are urged to wear helmets.
The cause of the crash is being investigated by the sheriff’s office.
