A police officer was transported to the hospital after her police squad was struck by a suspected drunk driver in Waukegan early Sunday morning.

The incident happened around 4 a.m. Sunday near Yorkhouse Road and Frolic Avenue in Waukegan.

A Waukegan police officer was called out to a call of a tree that came down in the roadway, according to a police report.

The officer was blocking a portion of the road when her squad car was struck.

The suspect vehicle rear-ended the squad car, the report said.

The Waukegan Fire Department was called to the scene to evaluate the drivers of both vehicles.

Paramedics transported the officer to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the at-fault vehicle was arrested for driving under the influence.

The Waukegan Police Department Major Crash Unit was called to the scene and is investigating the incident.

The suspect has not been identified yet and has not appeared in bond court.
