A child was safely recovered after prosecutors say the father abducted the child in Round Lake Beach and threatened to kill both the child and the child’s mother.
Donell A. Howard, 28, of Waukegan, was charged with child abduction by parent, a Class 4 felony.
Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Kelse Banks said during a bond hearing that Howard has a child in common with a woman.
The two of them are not married and there are no court orders regarding paternity or parenting time.
Banks said there was an incident last year where Howard became violent and Howard is no longer in the child’s life.
The child was staying at his grandfather’s house last Monday.
Howard showed up at the house and took the child, Banks said.
The mother found out and told Howard to return her son. Banks said Howard threatened to hurt the mother and son.
He also threatened to kidnap and kill both of them, Banks said.
Banks said Howard told the mother he would bring the child back the next day. He also allegedly told her that if the police were notified she would no longer be able to see the child.
The mother contacted the Round Lake Beach Police Department, which began investigating.
Officers tracked Howard and located him and the child, who was recovered safely.
Lake County Judge George Pappas ordered Howard held on a $100,000 bond, which was set when a warrant was issued.
Howard remains held in the Lake County Jail and would need to post $10,000 cash in order to be released.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 19.
