Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and extinguished a fire on the second floor of the old Vista Medical Center West hospital in Waukegan Saturday evening.

The Waukegan Fire Department responded around 6:30 p.m. Saturday to 2615 Washington Street for a report of a structure fire.

A 911 caller reported they saw smoke showing from a building, according to Waukegan Fire Marshal Todd Zupec.

Firefighters arrived and found smoke coming from the old vacant Vista Medical Center West building.

The initial response was upgraded due to the large size of the building, Zupec told Lake and McHenry County Scanner.

Fire crews were met initially with heavy smoke on the second and third floors.

The fire was located on the second floor and was eventually extinguished.

Firefighters remained on the scene performing overhaul and ventilation operations.

All fire crews were cleared from the scene by approximately 8:30 p.m.
