A man was taken into custody after prosecutors say he stole a golf cart, crashed the cart into a police car and led officers on a chase in Lake Bluff Wednesday afternoon.

Christian Kilburn, 32, of Massachusetts, was charged with theft between $500 and $10,000, a Class 3 felony.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Dino Katris said officers were called for a well-being check on Green Bay Road in Lake Bluff.

Officers attempted to stop Kilburn, who was driving a golf cart.

Kilburn did not stop for police and eventually struck a tree and a mailbox, Katris said.

The golf cart also struck a squad car and Kilburn continued to drive, Katris said.

Witnesses reported seeing the police chase, which ended on Green Bay Road near Laurel Avenue in Lake Forest.

Officers arrested Kilburn and learned the golf cart was stolen from the Lake Bluff Golf Club at Route 176 and Green Bay Road.

The stolen vehicle was valued at $5,000, Katris said.

A public defender representing Kilburn said it seemed to be a “joyride” and there was no intention to permanently deprive the golf course of the golf cart.

Lake County Judge Theodore Potkonjak ordered Kilburn held on a $25,000 bond.

Kilburn remains held in the Lake County Jail and would need to post $2,500 cash in order to be released.

A bond review hearing is scheduled for Monday.
