A five-vehicle crash on Route 12 in Lake Zurich Tuesday afternoon left one person trapped and three people hospitalized in unknown condition, fire officials said.

The Lake Zurich Police Department and Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded at 2:25 p.m. Tuesday to Route 12 and Ela Road in Lake Zurich for a report of a multiple-vehicle crash.

Firefighters arrived and found five vehicles involved with varying damage, Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Captain Keith Hohs told Lake and McHenry County Scanner.

One of the vehicles was rolled over onto its roof and one person was trapped.

Crews quickly administered care to the trapped occupant and extricated them, Hohs said.

Four ambulances – each from the Lake Zurich, Barrington, Barrington Countryside and Mundelein fire departments – responded to the scene.

Three of the seven total patients were transported to a local hospital, and the rest refused to be transported, Hohs said.

Fire officials were not able to provide their conditions.

Route 12 was temporarily shut down and fire crews remained on the scene for around two hours.

The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department was assisted at the scene by the Barrington, Barrington Countryside, Mundelein and Wauconda fire departments.

The Wheeling and Inverness fire departments provided coverage for the Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department during the incident.
