A 21-year-old man from Deerfield and University of Michigan student died Sunday after his scooter crashed head-on into a car near the man’s school campus, police said.

The Ann Arbor, Michigan Police Department said the crash occurred at Oakland Avenue and Hill Street around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

A sedan and a motorized scooter were involved in the incident.

Officers arrived and located a 21-year-old man with significant head injuries, police officials said.

The 21-year-old man was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital on Sunday. Officials identified him as Seth Sugar, 21, of Deerfield.

A preliminary investigation showed Sugar was operating a battery-powered motorized scooter.

He was traveling eastbound on Hill Street when the scooter crossed the center line near Oakland Avenue, police officials said.

The scooter collided head-on with the sedan, which had been traveling westbound.

The driver of the sedan, a 77-year-old Ann Arbor resident, was uninjured in the crash and remained on the scene.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Unit responded to the scene and assisted in the crash investigation.

Sugar was a rising senior at the University of Michigan — which is nearby where the fatal crash occurred.

An obituary for Sugar said he was expected to graduate in the spring with a degree in economics and a minor in entrepreneurship from the Ross School of Business.

“Seth had a zest for life that had no boundaries. He had an incredible love of learning, passion for sports, and a heart of gold. He will be forever missed and cherished,” the obituary said.

A chapel service is being held Wednesday in Arlington Heights followed by a burial.
