The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado hit Huntley, damaging buildings, and two other tornadoes touched down in Barrington and Long Grove Wednesday evening.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said a survey team was sent to Lake County and McHenry County on Thursday.
The team confirmed three tornadoes had touched down in the two counties.
The first one, rated EF-1, occurred in Huntley and had a maximum wind speed of 90 mph, the NWS said.
The two others, both rated EF-0, occurred in Barrington and Long Grove.
The Barrington one had a maximum wind speed of 80 mph and the Long Grove one had a maximum speed of 70 mph.
Officials say the total confirmed number of tornadoes that occurred in the northern Illinois area is seven so far. Survey teams are still working in the field Thursday.
Huntley Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Michael Pierce told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the roof of an apartment building had blown off in the 10700 block of Timer Drive West in Huntley around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday.
Crews also found a second apartment building, located adjacent to the first, in the 11400 block of Douglas Avenue with damage.
The Douglas Avenue building had broken windows and also had its roof blown off, Pierce said.
Trees were down and other debris was scattered around the neighborhood.
The Huntley Building Department deemed both apartment buildings uninhabitable.
Pierce said the residents of both buildings, which totaled approximately eight units, were displaced.
The American Red Cross is assisting residents with living arrangements. The Huntley Public Works was working to clean up the area.
The fire department was also called to the StorSafe of Huntley North, 11200 Kiley Drive, after the storage building’s roof sustained damage.
A residence in the 11400 block of Russell Drive also sustained roof damage after a tree branch went through the roof, Pierce said.
Crews responded to calls for power lines down in Huntley following the storm.
No injuries were reported at any of the locations the fire department was called to Wednesday evening in Huntley.
The NWS had issued a tornado warning around 6:13 p.m. for southern McHenry County, including Huntley, Algonquin, Cary and Crystal Lake.
A tornado warning was also issued around 6:35 p.m. for southwestern Lake County, including Vernon Hills, Long Grove and Lake Zurich areas.
The Lake County Division of Transportation said they sent crews out to assist with storm cleanup.
Debris and trees came down and blocked traffic on Old McHenry Road.
“Old McHenry Road looked like this after the big storm rolled through last night. Kudos to our team that responded to clean up the area so the road could be reopened safely in a timely manner!” the division of transportation said.
