A 24-year-old woman walking along the tracks died after she was struck by a Metra that was passing through downtown Grayslake Tuesday evening, officials said.

The Grayslake Police Department, Metra Police Department and Grayslake Fire Protection District responded around 7:25 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Seymour Avenue and Center Street.

Metra reported a pedestrian had been hit by Metra train 117 on the North Central Service line.

Train 117 had been scheduled to arrive at Antioch at 7:40 p.m. but was stopped following the incident. Extensive delays were reported.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office told Lake and McHenry County Scanner the victim was a 24-year-old Round Lake Beach woman.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by the fire department.

Preliminary reports indicate the woman was walking down the railroad track between rails when she was struck, the coroner’s office said.

The coroner’s office has scheduled an autopsy on the 24-year-old for Wednesday.

The woman’s identity is being withheld pending notification to her family.

It has not been determined yet whether the incident was an accident or suicide.

Metra reported around 9:54 p.m. Tuesday that the train involved was on the move again but operating with extensive delay.
