Two dozen fire departments responded to a second-alarm fire that caused $750,000 in damage and is believed to have left a home a total loss near Woodstock Friday afternoon.

The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded around 3:42 p.m. Friday to the 100 block of South Shannon Drive in unincorporated Woodstock for multiple 911 calls of a residential structure fire.

A neighbor, who initially spotted heavy smoke, called 911 to report the fire, according to Woodstock Fire/Rescue District Communication Specialist Alex Vucha.

Firefighters found a large two-story home with heavy flames and smoke showing from the roof.

Firefighters deployed hose lines to battle the evolving fire while searching for occupants inside.

The rural area is not supplied with hydrants and crews had to establish rural water supply operations at the roadway, Vucha said.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the second alarm for additional fire crews and resources to respond to the scene.

A search of the residence was completed and portions of the second floor collapsed, prompting firefighters to transition to a defensive strategy, Vucha said.

The fire was considered under control within 60 minutes.

Firefighters continued to extinguish small hotspots for an additional 60 minutes.

The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported to any firefighters or civilians.

The fire caused significant damage to the structure and contents, Vucha said.

The home has been deemed uninhabitable and beyond repair. Initial damages estimates were $750,000.

Vucha said preliminary investigations do not show the fire was suspicious in nature but the fire remains under investigation.

A house at the same location was destroyed during another fire in March 2017. The residence was demolished after the first fire and rebuilt several years ago.
