A fire caused significant damage to a home in Round Lake Beach Tuesday and fire officials have issued a warning saying it was caused by a popular reclining sofa that was recalled.
The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 9:06 a.m. Tuesday to the 1300 block of North Hickory Avenue in Round Lake Beach for a report of a structure fire.
911 callers reported smoke coming from the residence, according to Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Lt. Eric Beck.
Fire crews arrived in less than six minutes and found light smoke coming from the home’s roof eaves.
Firefighters made entry and found heavy smoke conditions as well as significant heat and fire damage to the residence.
It appeared the fire had burned for a while before it no longer had oxygen to sustain itself, Beck said.
Beck said crews were quickly able to apply water to the remaining hot spots. No injuries were reported to occupants or fire crews.
Investigators determined the fire was started by an Ashley Furniture Party Time Collection power reclining sofa.
The sofa, along with a matching loveseat and chair, were recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in early June.
The recall includes loveseats with model numbers 3700318, 3700418, 3700318C and 3700418C; sofas with model numbers 3700315, 3700415, 3700315C and 3700415C; and recliners with model numbers 3700313, 3700413, 3700313C and 3700413C.
CPSC said at the time of the recall that Ashley Furniture was aware of six reports of the cupholder with LED lighting overheating, resulting in fire and smoke damage and damaged furniture.
Fire officials say that any residents who own the products are urged to immediately unplug them and contact the company for repair.
Approximately 253,000 of the loveseats, sofas and recliners were sold in the United States by the company.
