A child riding on a bicycle was struck by a van and firefighters had to extricate him from underneath the vehicle in Buffalo Grove Monday evening.

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department, Arlington Heights Fire Department and Buffalo Grove Police Department responded around 5:37 p.m. Monday to Dundee Road and Arlington Heights Road in Buffalo Grove.

Officers arrived and found a child had been struck by a van just west of the intersection.

It was reported that the victim’s legs were trapped underneath the vehicle, according to fire department radio traffic.

The fire department response was upgraded for additional crews to the scene to help with extrication.

Buffalo Grove Director of Communications Molly Gillespie said the child, a 13-year-old boy, was briefly trapped.

Firefighters had to raise the front of the white Ford work van to free the child.

Paramedics transported the injured boy, who had been riding a bicycle at the time of the crash, to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The extent of his injuries was not released but he is stabilized, Gillespie said.

Officers at the scene reported the victim was conscious and talking.

Dundee Road was shut down by police during the incident.

The Buffalo Grove Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
