Police say an Uber driver was robbed by four suspects who fired shots and then hours later forcefully carjacked another Uber driver of her car and belongings in Zion.
The Zion Police Department received a gunshot detection alert around 1:46 a.m. Tuesday in the area of the 2400 block of Hebron Avenue and 2400 block of Galilee Avenue.
Officers responded and were approached by an Uber driver, according to Zion Deputy Police Chief Christopher Sweeting.
The Uber driver reported he had just been robbed at gunpoint by four offenders, who fired shots after the robbery.
The incident was determined to have taken place in the 2400 block of Galilee Avenue, Sweeting said. No injuries were reported.
The Zion Police Department responded around 3:36 a.m. the same morning to a report of a vehicular hijacking and robbery in the 2400 block of Gilboa Avenue.
Officers determined that a female Uber driver was robbed and pulled out of her vehicle by four offenders.
The suspects fled with her vehicle, phone and purse, Sweeting said.
Officers began investigating and located the victim’s vehicle and phone near where the incident occurred.
The woman was evaluated by paramedics but was not transported to the hospital.
Sweeting said it is believed that both robberies are related and likely to have been committed by the same offenders.
Detectives are actively investigating the crimes and following up on investigative leads.
“If you are a rideshare driver, please use caution as this type of crime is becoming more prevalent nationwide,” Sweeting said.
Anyone with information regarding the cases are urged to call the Zion Police Department at 847-872-8000 or Lake County Crime Stoppers at 847-662-2222.
