Two people were injured and one was hospitalized after a toxic chemical reaction occurred between chlorine and muriatic acid at LA Fitness in Lake Zurich Thursday evening.
The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department and Lake Zurich Police Department responded around 5:30 p.m. Thursday to LA Fitness, 825 South Rand Road in Lake Zurich, for a report of a chemical reaction.
Fire crews arrived to find the facility already being evacuated, Lake Zurich Fire Captain Benny Yee said.
A maintenance contractor on-site told fire crews that a chemical reaction occurred between chlorine and muriatic acid.
The chemical reaction reportedly occurred in the pool area of the gym, according to fire department radio traffic.
Crews evaluated two people with respiratory complaints.
One of them was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington and the other was released at the scene, Yee said.
Crews isolated the scene and the fire department, maintenance worker and staff determined the chemical reaction was finished.
“Once contained, the facility was monitored for air quality and chemical reactivity,” Yee said.
“There were no abnormal findings, and the facility was turned over to the property manager,” Yee added.
The gym remained closed on Thursday and re-opened Friday morning.
No firefighters were injured in the response.
The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department was assisted by the Barrington, Barrington Countryside, Countryside, Long Grove, Palatine and Wauconda fire departments.
Police provided traffic and crowd control during the incident.
The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department reminds residents to use caution and read proper use, storage and disposal directions for household chemicals.
